Programs and research aimed at reducing tobacco use across America.

Tobacco use remains the number-one cause of preventable death in the United States, and combined with secondhand smoke, results in more than 480,000 deaths per year and approximately $225 billion in direct medical costs annually.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has a long history of working with national and local health organizations, faith groups, businesses, government, and others to advocate for higher tobacco taxes, strong smoke-free air laws, and well-funded programs to prevent kids from smoking and help smokers quit. As we continue building on this history, RWJF is working to reach communities nationwide that have not benefited equally from reduced smoking rates.
