Effectiveness of a Grant Program's Efforts to Promote Synergy Within its Funded Initiatives
Perceptions of Participants of the Southern Rural Access Program

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Southern Rural Access Program (SRAP) was a multi-year initiative to improve access to primary health care services in rural areas of Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, West Virginia and east Texas. This article uses interviews with key participants to evaluate the explicit strategy to build synergy within SRAP. The evaluator found that participants perceived more synergies through SRAP than through other programs in which they participated. SRAP participants felt targeting funding to culturally and geographically similar sites, supporting networking opportunities across the initiative, and advocacy of program leadership fostered synergy.
