Purpose:

The Medicaid Leadership Institute is a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation managed by the Center for Health Care Strategies. The program provides a unique opportunity for current Medicaid directors to participate in a 12-month leadership development program designed to cultivate the skills they need to transform their state Medicaid programs into national models for high-quality, cost-effective care and coverage expansions.

Eligibility & Selection Criteria:

• Only one applicant from each state will be considered per year.
• All applicants must obtain a letter of support for their participation from their Governor.
• Priority will be given to applicants who have been in their current position at least nine months.
• Participants will be expected to attend three, three-day meetings over the course of the 12-month program, and to commit additional time for self study and site visits.

Applicants will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

• Strong commitment to public service and the improvement of public programs.
• Clear vision of Medicaid’s role in promoting high-quality, cost-effective care.
• Clear articulation of goals for their Medicaid agency.
• Clear delineation of individual goals for improving leadership skills.
• Readiness to contribute data and analytics to emerging national research and evaluation opportunities.

Key Dates:

• March 10, 2009 (2 p.m. ET)—Informational Web conference call. Details can be found on the program’s Web site. Registration is required.
• April 10, 2009 (3 p.m. ET)—Deadline for receipt of applications submitted online.
• June 15, 2009—Notification of acceptance.
• July 1, 2009—Program launch.

Total Award:

Up to five individuals will be selected to participate in the initial year of the program.
