Aetna, Georgia Public Broadcasting Launch Childhood Obesity Prevention Campaign

Aetna has partnered with Georgia Public Broadcasting to launch a yearlong campaign aimed at raising awareness about childhood obesity, the Hartford Business Journal reports. Supported by a $50,000 grant from the Aetna Foundation, the campaign features a series of television and radio advertising spots and a 60-minute television special during which an expert panel will discuss causes of and solutions to Georgia’s childhood obesity epidemic. As part of the campaign, GPB and Aetna will also host community health events throughout the state. The campaign will feature Neal Shulman, M.D., the real-life “Doc Hollywood” portrayed by Michael J. Fox in the 1991 film of the same title. Shulman, who currently teaches at Emory University, will use the multimedia campaign and community events as a way to educate children and their parents about the importance of having healthy lifestyles. According to statistics provided by the Department of Human Resources, Division of Public Health, nearly one-quarter of Georgia students are obese by the time they enter third grade (Hartford Business Journal, 9/24/09; Aetna Foundation release, 9/24/09).
