Nickelodeon Goes Dark for Sixth Annual Worldwide Day of Play

To promote the sixth annual World Wide Day of Play (WWDP), all Nickelodeon television channels and Web sites will shut down for three hours on September 26, First Coast News reports. For this year’s event, Nickelodeon, Nicktoons Network, NOGGIN, The N, Nick.com, Noggin.com, Nicktoonsnetwork.com and The-N.com shut down between 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. to encourage children to play without a television or computer. WWDP is part of a broader Nickelodeon-sponsored health and wellness effort that includes grant programs, public service announcements, Web site content and games. According to a release, more than 1,000 local events were scheduled to encourage children and their families to spend more time engaged in outdoor play in an effort to prevent childhood obesity. Clanzel T. Brown Park in Jacksonville, Fla., hosted an afternoon of activities, including demonstrations on how to make healthy snacks and follow a balanced diet. More than 250,000 children in more than six countries and in every U.S. state were expected to participate in the day of play, adding to the “more than 1 million kids that have pledged to get healthy” over the past six years of the initiative (Hautala/Feldmann, First Coast News, 9/27/09; Nickelodeon release, 9/15/09).
