The Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation (EVSC) in Indiana has received a three-year, $1 million grant to support school-based childhood obesity prevention efforts, WFIE 14 reports. The funding will allow eight additional schools to join the 13 schools currently participating in a comprehensive fitness program. For example, students at Harper Elementary School arrive early for school twice per week to engage in 30 minutes of physical activity. Activities include dodge ball, dance, aerobics and walking through the halls while wearing a pedometer. According to statistics cited by WFIE, nearly 16 percent of children in Indiana are considered overweight (Forbes, WFIE 14, 10/1/09).
