New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine (D) recently announced the launch of a statewide campaign aimed at educating children about the importance of consuming nutritious food and getting regular physical activity, the New Jersey Newsroom reports. The Nutrition and Fitness Challenge invites children ages 6 to 17 to use a Web site to chart their daily progress toward four goals: exercising one hour per day, eating healthy, eliminating sugary drinks and reducing computer and television screen time. To help students achieve this goal, the Web site also features a variety of resources, including a body mass index calculator, charts with foods choices, options for exercise and links to other health and fitness Web sites. Calling obesity a “serious public health issue,” state Health Commissioner Heather Howard noted that the challenge “is another step in our continuing efforts to improve the health of all New Jerseyans," adding that “this challenge can motivate kids from an early age to watch what they eat and find sports and physical activities they enjoy” (New Jersey Newsroom, 10/2/09).
