AAFP, Coca-Cola Partner on Beverage, Sweetener Public Education Campaign

The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) has announced a corporate partnership with The Coca-Cola Co., under which the two will seek to educate the public about the role that consumer products play in a healthy lifestyle, the Kansas City Business Journal reports. Representing the first partnership for the AAFP's new Consumer Alliance program, Coca-Cola will collaborate with the AAFP to develop consumer education content related to beverages and sweeteners for the AAFP's consumer health and wellness Web site. Specifically, the content, which is expected to be available on the academy's Web site in January, will focus on sugar-free alternatives to help consumers make better choices. According to the Kansas City Business Journal, Coca-Cola is providing a grant of an unspecified amount to the AAFP for the project. According to a release, the AAFP is also planning to work with future Consumer Alliance partners to "develop innovative programs and materials to educate consumers and health professionals about enhancing food and beverage selections, boosting physical activity, achieving emotional well-being, and promoting other aspects of a healthy and balanced lifestyle" (LaMartina, Kansas City Business Journal, 10/5/09; AAFP News Now, 10/6/09).
