Florida’s Vero Beach is home to a new nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching children and their families about vegetable gardens and how they can be used to promote wellness, the TC Palm reports. Founded by Nancy Heinrich, the Growing Healthy Kids program will assist children in planting small vegetable gardens in their yards. The program will target children ages 8 to 12, as research suggests children who plant and tend a garden are more likely to consume its vegetables. An added benefit is that caring for a garden gets children outdoors and physically active. The nonprofit has established a goal of planting 200 gardens by March 2010. To help in this endeavor, Heinrich has formed an alliance with the Indian River Boys & Girls Clubs, which assisted in the building of the first garden on October 13 at the Sebastian Boys and Girls Club (Moore, TC Palm, 10/10/09).
