Pennsylvania Insurer, Departments of Health, Education Provide Funding for Childhood Obesity Prevention Efforts

Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania and the state Departments of Health and Education have joined together to provide schools with grants to support efforts to reduce childhood obesity, the Pocono Record reports. Awarded under the Active Schools Grant Program, the funding will help schools establish “structured activity programs” during the 2009-10 academic year. Five schools, the most recent recipients of the funding, received $5,000 from the Department of Health and $10,000 from Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania for the initiative. The recipients include Weatherly Area Elementary/Middle School in Carbon County; Hanover Area Junior/Senior High School in Luzerne County; Clear Run Intermediate School and Swiftwater Intermediate School in Monroe County; and Wayne Highlands Middle School in Wayne County (Pocono Record, 10/15/09).
