West Virginia Makes Efforts to Improve Nutrition Standards for Day Care Centers

West Virginia school officials are poised to launch a program aimed at strengthening nutrition standards for the state's day care facilities, the Charlestown Daily Mail reports. Expected to be based on the federal Child and Adult Care Food Program, the effort is largely modeled after Delaware's child care nutrition program, which has been heralded as one of the nation's most progressive initiatives. Although details of the program have yet to be released, it is expected to include phasing out whole milk and 2 percent milk in favor of 1 percent and skim milk, and increasing servings of whole grains and fresh fruits and vegetables. The new standards are also expected to include more stringent regulations for portion size and physical activity recommendations. Program officials expect to begin training providers in June, with plans to roll out the program during the next 18 months (Karmasek, Charlestown Daily Mail, 10/26/09).
