A group of almost three dozen allies, including hospitals, school districts, charitable agencies and planners in a Chicago suburb, have joined to launch The Forward Coalition, an effort aimed at tackling childhood obesity, the Naperville Sun reports. The Forward Coalition will advocate healthy eating and physical activity as a means to curb childhood obesity and the diseases that are often associated with it. Although the group has yet to determine how to specifically disseminate this information, they anticipate that the countywide effort will cost between $8 million and $10 million to launch and implement over the next two years. Federal stimulus funds being made available through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention may act as one source of funding for the initiative. According to data collected on local high school students, approximately 35 percent have high cholesterol, a finding that school officials attribute to high obesity rates (Frick Carlman, Naperville Sun, 10/30/09).
