Louisiana Schools Receive Awards for Nutrition, Fitness Programs

In an effort to curb soaring childhood obesity rates in the state, the Louisiana Department of Education is rewarding schools that implement programs aimed at improving nutrition and promoting physical activity in schools, the Times-Picayune reports. Launched in 2003, the Healthy School Award program seeks to recognize the healthiest schools in the state. One 2008-09 award winner, Bissonet Plaza Elementary School, received recognition for its 20-minute jogging and walking club, daily physical education classes, and five-minute stand up and dance sessions, which take place every Friday morning. Between October and April, students compete in the Mileage Plus Running Program, which teaches running techniques and the importance of nutrition and hydration. Last year, the school also participated in a program operated by Ochsner Medical Center and Ochsner’s Elmwood Fitness Center that taught children circuit training in strength, aerobic and cardio conditioning. Children also learned how to prepare healthy snacks and make wise menu selections at fast food restaurants. Bissonet has also been mindful about the food served in cafeterias and at school events. Cafeteria offerings include whole-grain breads and water as a drink choice, and workers now use less butter when preparing food. Refreshments at family and movie nights include granola bars, pickles and 100-calorie snacks (Bronston, New Orleans Times-Picayune, 11/1/09).
