Philadelphia Story

The Food Trust

It's one of the basics of life, and something so many of us take for granted: healthy food.

Yet, in many inner-city neighborhoods, residents who want and need affordable healthy food all too often come up short. Their options may be limited to corner stores, where it is far easier to buy potato chips and candy bars than to purchase fresh fruit or vegetables. Fast-food restaurant are also handy—but, again, the choices are rarely healthful or nutritious. Improving access to affordable healthy food in communities is an important part of reversing the nation’s childhood obesity epidemic.

In Philadelphia, one RWJF-supported program is re-introducing affordable healthy food to urban neighborhoods. In partnership with other groups, the Food Trust developed a program that offers incentives for supermarkets to open in sections of town that they once had abandoned. With support from the Foundation, The Food Trust is also working with communities in other states to explore ways of replicating this success.
