This grant supports the continuation and expansion of an ongoing program, which was launched in 1986 with a $32,000 Foundation grant, to monitor the impact of AIDS and AIDS-related illnesses on the nation's hospitals. The grantee will conduct an additional two waves of the survey on this expanded sample of hospitals over the next three years, which now includes approximately 1,500 hospitals, compared with approximately 450 in the original 1986 study sample. The study will include assessment of the costs of hospital care for AIDS and the adequacy of hospital reimbursement, monitoring public and private reimbursement patterns, tracking uncompensated care trends among the hospital groups, measuring the use of outpatient and community-based alternatives to inpatient care across regions and by hospital group, monitoring changes in HIV-related hospital care for children and adults, and monitoring trends in the use of AZT and other pharmacologic interventions across regions and hospital groups.
