Study of the effects of welfare reform on the health of urban families
The purpose of this project is to examine the effects of welfare reform on the employment and earnings, health, well-being, and behavior of urban families in up to six cities. The study will also assess changes in the social and economic vitality of neighborhoods and changes in institutions and public service delivery systems; and it will document and analyze the implementation process for welfare reforms. Foundation funds will be targeted towards the measurement of reform's effects upon health and health service systems. Other funds are being secured to cover other elements of the study. The study is one of a family of efforts currently being proposed that will examine the health and other effects of welfare reform. Study products will include accessible and timely reports, designed to serve multiple audiences, and outreach to local and national media, as well as interaction with agencies and policy makers as the study unfolds.
