Distance learning program in advanced practice nursing

The purpose of this project is to strengthen a statewide distance learning network for advanced nurse practitioners throughout New York State. Under the leadership of the School of Nursing, State University of New York (SUNY), Stony Brook, computer-based curricula for preparing these first-line practitioners have been successfully introduced. The challenge now confronting the School is to build a dependable cadre of local clinical preceptors to ensure a strong clinical base for this regional distance learning system. This grant supports the design and implementation of a preceptor training program that includes workshops, seminars, and computer-based learning modules. Stony Brook's experience in off-campus education for advanced practice nurses has been an important asset to the RWJF Partnerships for Training Program. This grant will enhance its value to this national effort, and will produce a faculty training resource that will benefit the country's growing numbers of teaching programs in advanced practice nursing (now approaching the 300 mark).
