The Foundation's program, New Jersey Health Initiatives, was designed to support projects in New Jersey that develop new approaches to resolving the state's health care needs, focusing on the Foundation's goal areas. The purpose of this project is to develop regional ethics committees to assist the state's 407 nursing homes and assisted living residences. The committees will teach the skills needed to confront the myriad of complex ethical problems inherent in long-term care, including patient autonomy, fair allocation of health resources, and balancing the risk/benefit ratio, to name but a few. Project staff will develop an educational curriculum, recruit staff from nursing homes and assisted living residences, increase regional long-term care ethics committees to 12 statewide, and conduct epidemiological research.
