The Foundation's program, New Jersey Health Initiatives, was designed to support projects in New Jersey that develop new approaches to resolving the state's health care needs, focusing on the Foundation's goal areas.Under this multi-agency collaboration, a primary health and mental health project will be created to serve 240 long-term psychiatric clients in Hudson County. A nurse practitioner and family practice resident will work directly with mental health staff at four psychiatric day treatment programs in order to increase access to consistent and systematic medical care, including primary, gynecological, dental, and preventive care. Over 40 family practice residents will be trained in the care of the mentally ill. In addition, with New Jersey Association of Mental Health Agencies sponsorship, an annual statewide workshop will be organized to address the challenges of providing medical care to people with chronic mental illness.
