The Foundation's Investigator Awards in Health Policy Research Program was designed to support highly qualified individuals to undertake broad studies of the most challenging policy issues in health and health care facing America. The purpose of this project is to understand the operant mechanisms by which hospital organizational structure and processes affect patient outcomes. The project aims to: (1) obtain a better understanding of how the manipulability features of hospital organization affect variation in patient outcomes and costs; (2) engage leaders in the hospital sector in a discussion of these findings and their implications for the redesign and administration of acute inpatient clinical care; (3) assess the impact of hospital-sector changes on current and future nursing work force requirements; and (4) consider the implications of changing hospital workforce requirements on nursing education and health work force policy.
