The Foundation's Program, After School: Connecting Children at Risk With Responsible Adults to Help Reduce Youth Substance Abuse and Other Health-Compromising Behaviors, was designed to support a three-city demonstration project designed to connect at-risk urban youth with responsible adults in activities after school. This grant supports a broad-based community initiative to significantly expand youth participation in sports with a primary focus on connecting youth sports with caring adults and other developmental supports. The goals of the initiative are to: (1) increase youth's resilience and protective factors that prevent substance abuse and other risk-taking behaviors; (2) improve physical health outcomes; and (3) strengthen the social infrastructure in low-income neighborhoods.
