Evaluating attitudes about alcohol and tobacco use in young children
The purpose of this project is to develop and validate a methodology for studying young children's attitudes toward tobacco and alcohol products. The project will use structured observations of play behavior in preschool and early elementary school children to study their perceptions of the social utility of these products. It is anticipated that through observation of role-play scenarios, in which the child is featured as an adult character, information will be gained about the implicit attitudes and expectations that young children have regarding tobacco and alcohol use. Development and validation of this method will lead to a better understanding of attitude formation in early childhood, and provide tools for evaluating tobacco prevention interventions targeting this age group.
