Parent expectations: Doctor-parent communication and pediatrician antibiotic over-prescribing for upper respiratory infections

The Foundation's Generalist Physician Faculty Scholars Program was designed to strengthen the presence of generalist physician faculty in the nation's medical schools through career development awards to outstanding junior faculty in medical school departments/divisions of family medicine, general internal medicine and general pediatrics. This grant supports research on parent expectations, doctor-parent communication, and pediatrician antibiotic over-prescribing for upper respiratory infections. The study will: (1) explore what systematic communication behaviors parents use to express their desires for antibiotic prescriptions for their children; (2) examine what parent communication behaviors lead to both accurate and inaccurate physician perceptions of parental expectations for antibiotics; (3) determine if physician perceptions of parental expectations are associated with antibiotic prescribing for viral conditions and higher rates of assigning bacterial diagnoses to upper respiratory infections; and (4) determine if specific physician communication behaviors are associated with increased parental satisfaction when antibiotics are expected and not received.
