Menthol cigarette use has been concentrated among African-American males but is increasing among young people, yet little research is being conducted into the toxicology, marketing, and manufacturing of these products. To begin to examine these and other issues, the First Conference on Menthol Cigarettes: Setting the Research Agenda will be held on October 11-12, 2001, in Atlanta, Georgia. The conference will bring together scientists representing a broad range of disciplines for the purpose of explicating what is known about menthol cigarettes and what research needs to be conducted to understand more fully the impacts of the use of these cigarettes. This program contract provides support for the conference and travel expenses for invited participants. Additional support is being provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Cancer Institute, the State of California's Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program, and the American Legacy Foundation.
