The purpose of this project is to develop and apply Geographic Information Systems-based methods for small area analysis to generate a standard methodology for building spatially based predictive risk models that allow targeting of local health and health care programs. It will focus on asthma in low-income minority children in North Carolina as a representative health problem, and develop integrated strategies to tackle housing-related environmental factors and improve clinical care. Two unique aspects of this project support its selection as a demonstration model: (1) a method to integrate geographic location data down to the local tax parcel unit level has been developed, thus allowing true small area analysis; and (2) previous projects in childhood lead exposure demonstrate the ability to partner with county health departments, private care providers, and community organizations to develop analytic models of great utility to these end users which they otherwise would not have been able to access or apply.
