This grant provides support for the World Trade Center Ground Zero Relief Project that the Art Science Research Laboratory in lower Manhattan established shortly after the September 11 attacks. Most of the funds were used to purchase much needed clothing and equipment for the uniformed recovery workers deployed at Ground Zero in Manhattan, and at the Fresh Kills landfill site in Staten Island where materials removed from Ground Zero were taken. Workers included personnel from the New York Police Department's Emergency Services Unit, the Fire Department of New York, and the Port Authority Police Department. Frequently changing authority over responsibility for supplies, shifting locations for distribution of supplies, and other problems resulted in shortages of supplies that posed health risks to the recovery workers, especially in the winter months.
