Forum to advance an evidence-based approach to youth substance abuse and violence prevention

Under this Foundation grant, the Coalition for Evidence-Based Policy will sponsor a policy forum, involving key Congressional and federal agency policymakers, to advance an evidence-based approach to youth substance abuse and violence prevention programs. Public policies incorporating this evidence-based approach in the field of medicine have resulted in advances in health over the past 50 years. By contrast, in social and economic policy, government programs often are implemented without regard to evidence. An evidence-based approach to social and economic policy, advocated by the Coalition, would for the first time bring rapid change to areas such as education, poverty reduction, crime prevention, health care financing and delivery, and economic development, and fundamentally improve life outcomes for millions of Americans. The purpose of this project is to work closely with the federal agencies and congress to incorporate an "evidence-based approach" into government policy. The success of this project will be measured by the building of a consensus among key policymakers around concrete recommendations to advance the evidence-based approach--recommendations which would then be approved by the Coalition's Board. The final report/recommendations will carry a significant degree of credibility that will enable it to influence policy in a meaningful way.
