Studying the value of health care information technology in chronic disease management

The strategic use of information technology (IT) is widely considered to be an essential ingredient in providing high-quality chronic illness care in the outpatient setting. Despite the evidence of efficacy, adoption has been slow, in part due to uncertainty over the value of different IT components. The purpose of this project is for the Center for Information Technology Leadership to synthesize the evidence about the clinical, financial, and organizational value associated with the use of different IT components to support disease management activities. Deliverables of the project will include a report and an interactive software tool that will allow individual provider groups and payers to calculate the value of IT-enabled disease management in their specific settings. The project will be considered successful if it results in a widely disseminated report and analysis tool that offers clear evidence that health care organizations can use to make sound adoption decisions.
