The Foundation's Local Initiative Funding Partners Program is a matching grants program designed to establish partnerships between the Foundation and local grantmakers in support of innovative, community-based projects that improve health and health care for underserved and vulnerable populations.Under a related grant authorization, the successful New England Vote and Vaccinate campaign will be tested for replication nationwide. Under the Vote and Vaccinate program, up to 15 mini-grants grants of $8,000 each will be awarded to local health departments to support communities in their efforts to organize and implement influenza vaccination programs at or near polling places on November 2, 2004, for low-income and hard-to-reach adults over age 50. These are sites that vulnerable older adults can readily access. The purpose of this project is to test whether it is feasible to offer vaccinations at these sites, and whether the numbers of adults receiving the vaccination increases. This grant will provide guidance and technical support for communities in their efforts to provide access to flu shots near polling places. It also will help to develop and test a tool kit that will be widely disseminated to other communities for further project replication in 2005.
