According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Michigan's children rank second in the nation for overweight. A startling one in seven Michigan children is expected to develop type II diabetes at some point during childhood. In southeast Michigan, African-American and Hispanic children bear this burden particularly, with disproportionately higher rates of overweight. This grant provides support for Michigan's Department of Education and Family Independence Agency in significantly increasing the delivery of physical activity and healthy eating within after-school programs throughout the state, with special emphasis on urban, low-income populations. The National Association for Sports and Physical Education, the Physical Activity for Youth Policy Initiative of the National Coalition for Promoting Physical Activity, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are among a prominent and growing crowd of expert organizations that have called for embedding physical activity and healthy eating into the rapidly expanding field of after-school programs. If successful, this project could serve as a potential model for addressing childhood obesity through other statewide efforts to expand after-school services.
