Forecasting the trajectory of biomonitoring technologies and targeting their impact to reduce health care disparities

Biomonitoring, the ability to measure and track important indicators of pre-disease states and disease progression, is expected to play an increasing role in health care over the next 10 years. The purpose of this project is to help understand the likely trajectory of biomonitoring technologies, along with advances in disease prevention and treatment, and then specifically target opportunities to take advantage of these developments to reduce disparities in health. The project is valuable to the Foundation's programming because it can: (1) inform the staff's strategy around health information technology and how it supports individuals in managing their care; (2) provide an experience with a futures methodology; and (3) catalyze development of biomonitoring technologies and their adoption in the service of reducing health disparities. The project will produce written reports on the 10-year forecasts for the technology platforms to support biomonitoring and changes in disease understanding and biomarker development, and will produce a final report with recommendations to accelerate development of biomonitoring applications that can aid underserved populations.
