Creating and disseminating a frontline health and health care workforce data chartbook

The Foundation recently completed a thorough enumeration of the frontline health workforce. The purpose of this initial project was to identify and describe the health and health care occupational categories that require further study and operational definition. While there is a great deal of data available across many occupations from federal and state sources such as the Bureau of Labor Statistics, such data must be accessed in multiple places and formats before it can be translated to a usable form for analysis and planning. There is currently no single source that provides standard categories of information about the frontline workforce. Given the importance of this emerging group of occupations, a comprehensive and user-friendly chartbook would make data available in a consistent form to policy makers and workforce development professionals. The purpose of this project (chartbook) is to provide standardized demographic, geographic, and trend data for all of the groups selected and thus be of considerable use to policy makers in education, health employment, employment development, and labor at federal, state, and local levels. Once published, this book could be updated periodically. The chartbook could also be linked to a corresponding initiative to address shifts in regional demand, distribution, or characteristics of job categories.
