Maximizing the potential of technology to lessen isolation and decrease literacy barriers to achieve improved health outcomes for low-income people

The purpose of this project is to engage in a multifaceted planning process to assist low-income people to become more health-literate and, consequently, better able to manage their personal and family health problems. Health literacy is defined by the Office of the Surgeon General as "the ability of an individual to access, understand, and use health-related information and services to make appropriate health decisions." Poor health literacy impedes a patient's ability to understand his or her health care provider, to act on that provider's instructions, and to make informed decisions about their health. This project will develop a comprehensive, dependable, universally available health resource that will appeal to low-literacy patients. The resource will build upon an active Web site whose focus is on the working poor.
