The Foundation's initiative, Wisdom at Work: Retaining Experienced Nurses, was designed to build an evidence base for what works to retain experienced nurses and develop a better understanding of the impact of these interventions.Sixty-seven percent of nurses practice within hospitals, and the average age of a nurse in the United States is 45. As baby boomers reach the age of retirement, a major concern is whether there will be enough nurses to meet the demand for care. Another is whether "nursing boomers" will meet this demand and choose to remain in the workforce. The Foundation's Nursing Team was in the planning stages of a potential new investment, Wisdom at Work: Retaining Experienced Nurses. This program contract supported two consultants to assist RWJF with designing the Wisdom at Work program, which will build the evidence base for what works to retain experienced nurses in hospitals. Specific deliverables included: design options for testing packages of ergonomic, benefit, physical design and staffing solutions; criteria for applicants; and standard measures to demonstrate success and failure of the identified packages within and across sites.
