Most of the nation's 44 million adult smokers want and try to quit smoking. Expanded public and private cessation treatment coverage, a national telephone quitline network (1-800-QUIT-NOW) and wide availability of FDA-approved, over-the-counter nicotine replacement medications have greatly reduced barriers to evidence-based quit smoking treatments. These treatments double smokers' quitting success rates. But only 20-30 percent of U.S. quitters currently use them. The purpose of this project is to increase the use of proven tobacco cessation treatments by looking to a nontraditional source, the award-winning IDEO consumer product design firm, for fresh ideas to improve the appeal, delivery and use of proven tobacco cessation products and services, especially among smokers in underserved low-income and racial/ethnic populations. Funding will support the application of IDEO's innovative design principles and processes to five-10 "sentinel" cessation treatment redesign projects, creating and testing prototypes of treatments that are reconfigured to more successfully engage smokers throughout their quitting journeys and doing so in a way that helps the organizations delivering these interventions learn design thinking and methods. Deliverables will include prototypes and case studies based on these redesign projects, as well as a generic design framework and principles that can be broadly applied to new and existing treatments.
