Developing a set of measures to evaluate community-based childhood obesity prevention programs

Public health policy-makers and practitioners are trying many community-level policy, environmental and social interventions to prevent or reduce childhood obesity. But the field lacks ways to measure the effect of these community-level interventions. This project will support staff of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to develop a set of measures to evaluate community-based efforts for childhood obesity prevention. The measures will include health outcomes, individual behaviors, institutional policies and environments, and policies or environmental conditions for community interventions. The goal is to develop an initial set of measures that public- and private-sector organizations would be willing and able to use to assess ongoing and planned community-level initiatives. The project is important as a potential tool for a Foundation community initiative on childhood obesity, scheduled for 2007. The deliverable is an initial set of scientifically valid measures. The project will be considered successful if these measures are accepted by and useful to a broad array of stakeholders including researchers, funders and people planning and implementing childhood obesity prevention programs in communities.
