Caring Across Communities: Addressing Mental Health Needs of Diverse Children and Youth
The Foundation's program, Caring Across Communities: Addressing Mental Health Needs of Diverse Children and Youth, was designed to fund communities to establish school connected mental health services for students who require them, with an emphasis on overcoming the cultural and language barriers of children residing in immigrant and refugee families.The project staff are now staff at Children's Hospital of Boston and have a strong relationship with members of the Somali community where they have collaborated in assessing and understanding the mental health needs of Somali youth in the community and identifying ways to improve mental health care for these youth. The purpose of this project is to address this unmet need through three components of prevention and intervention: (1) parent meetings focused on anti-stigma and psycho-education; (2) teacher trainings on culture and identification of mental illness; and (3) direct intervention for youth using an empirically supported model of treatment, trauma systems therapy. They plan to serve over 700 individuals (which includes children and their families).
