The Foundation's Investigator Awards in Health Policy Research Program was designed to produce major works from senior and new investigators that would add to the health policy field's knowledge base. This grant project will deepen what we know about handoffs and use that knowledge to improve how they are done. The project's elements include: a complete compilation and analysis of published research, secondary analysis of existing data on handoffs collected at the University of Michigan Medical Center, meetings with other researchers and practitioners investigating handoff design issues, a small workshop of leading researchers, original data collection on key issues in design of handoff procedures (including video data), analysis of new data, and formulation of proposed handoff procedure designs. The project will last 27 months and will produce working papers, presentations, and articles.
