Integrating health impact assessments into the federal environmental impact process with a focus on Alaska Native communities

Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) have become a widely used tool to assess the impact of development on the environment; however, these EIAs do not assess the impact of development activities on health. Health Impact, or HIAs, represent a promising new tool that could help decision makers understand the impact of environmental changes on the health of a specific population. The purpose of this project is to integrate HIAs into the federal EIA process with a focus on development proposals affecting Alaska Native tribes. This grant supports the Foundation's interests in developing evidence-based tools designed to help policy and decision makers improve the public's health by addressing environmental and other non-health sector determinants of health. Deliverables include: three published integrated HIAs/EIAs for Alaskan resource development projects; a coordinated HIA/EIA training program for Alaskan state, tribal and local public health staff; an integrated HIA/EIA internet based resource site; and publications and presentations targeting various stakeholders.
