Hospitals can be challenging places for anyone to navigate. For those who don?t speak English or have limited literacy skills, making sense of complicated signage and unfamiliar terms is difficult. Hablamos Juntos and the Society for Environmental Graphic Design developed and tested 28 universally recognized graphic health care symbols that depict important hospital destinations — from registration and billing to surgery and infectious diseases. Following a successful trial run, they created 26 additional symbols. The complete set of 54 symbols is now in use at facilities in Providence, Kansas City, Atlanta and Seattle. "Incredible innovation can result when experts from different fields come together to find solutions," says Paul Tarini, Pioneer team director and senior program officer at RWJF. "With this project, health care and design experts have come together to create an adoptable solution that will make it easier for people, especially those who often experience the most challenges, to get the care they need.?
