A previously funded project updated the Community Health Status Indicators (CHSI) profiles for every county in the United States. CHSI profiles provide a snapshot of a county's health status (e.g., summary measures of health, access to care, preventive services use, vulnerable populations, environmental health, and leading causes of death); Healthy People 2010 targets; and national rates and peer counties for comparison purposes. Local public health agencies and their partners can use this tool to mobilize communities, inform programs and policy efforts, target resources, and set priorities for community health improvement. The profiles will be made available on the Internet at (www.communityhealth.hhs.gov). Transition funds will be used to build capacity of CHSI users so that they can use this tool for community health improvement efforts. Funding is also being provided by other agencies, HSRA, CDC and the National Library of Medicine. Memoranda of understanding are being developed to institutionalize and ease the transfer of data and other resources associated with CHSI.
