Creating a faith-based campaign in Middle Tennessee to increase low-income residents' access to full-service grocery stores
The purpose of this project is to build on the momentum that has established community gardens and farmers markets to locate a grocery store to serve three low-income neighborhoods in Middle Tennessee -- Edgehill, North Nashville and East Nashville -- that have historically had limited access to fresh and affordable foods and currently lack a full-service grocery store. The grantee will expand the efforts of the Food Security Partners of Middle Tennessee by engaging a faith-based coalition to attract a store. The deliverables will be to: (1) develop a leadership team on access to healthy foods; (2) assess the challenges to establishment of a grocery store to serve the neighborhoods; and (3) develop strategic messaging to persuade decision makers about the need for access to healthy, affordable foods in the identified neighborhoods. No Robert Wood Johnson Foundation funds will be used for lobbying.
