Advancing healthy environmental changes in the Mississippi Delta through a faith-based coalition of health ministries

The purpose of this project is to work with congregations in eight counties in Northwest Mississippi to shift the focus from individual responsibility to policy and environmental approaches in reducing childhood obesity. The Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi (CFNM), in partnership with the Healthy Congregations Initiative, will identify and strengthen faith-based coalitions in communities where children are at greatest risk for obesity. CFNM will provide incentives to the faith-based coalitions to identify environmental and policy changes appropriate for their neighborhoods and assist them in developing advocacy plans to advance those changes. Together with its partners, CFNM will convene a Healthy Communities, Healthy Congregations Regional Conference to promote advocacy and share best practices. This project will focus on rural, predominantly African-American communities where poverty rates are as high as 30 percent. The grantee will not use Robert Wood Johnson Foundation funds for lobbying.
