This project will maximize the use of federal Safe Routes to School (SRTS) funds; leverage additional government funding to increase physical activity for children; and work with partners to change state-level policies to benefit states and communities most in need. In response to growing concerns over health, climate and traffic congestion, Congress launched SRTS in 2005 by approving $612 million for states over five years. This project will expand the SRTS State Network Project, whose creation in 2007 was funded by the Foundation to get more children to walk and bike to school. The deliverables will be advocating policy changes in 15 states; enhancing the technological capabilities of the SRTS Web site; creating a report to update the work of the state networks; and publishing a national policy report on SRTS issues.
