This award will support continued development of the Child Health Institute of New Jersey (CHINJ) as a comprehensive biomedical research center. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and Johnson & Johnson launched CHINJ in 1998 with grants to the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS). A $5.5-million RWJF grant in 1998 supported establishment of the research center to improve child health and quality of life. In 2001, RWJF awarded $10 million for the construction of laboratory facilities for CHINJ. In 2005, RWJF provided CHINJ with a $10-million, four-year grant for startup costs (e.g., initial faculty recruitment). This grant provides support toward a $21-million, four-year plan to further develop infrastructure and to increase staff of CHINJ.
