This randomized trial will evaluate outcomes of Playworks, a program for structured play during recess, school time and after school in poor urban school districts. RWJF has funded Playworks to expand into 650 schools in 27 cities by 2012. The evaluation will assess implementation of the program, as well as any improvements in school climate, physical activity, health, academic outcomes, and instruction time that teachers may regain because classroom management is easier. The contractor will work with the RWJF on deliverables: one or two timely policy briefs or a final report on the evaluation (journal articles may also be considered as an alternative to the policy briefs or final report)." Results will be submitted to the U.S. Department of Education's "What Works" Clearinghouse, which disseminates evidence-based educational programs. A deliverable will be a public use data set for inclusion in the Foundation's Health and Medical Care Archive.
