Researching ways to overcome obstacles to creation of breakthrough new drugs
The Foundation's Investigator Awards in Health Policy Research Program was designed to produce major works from senior and new investigators that would add to the health policy field's knowledge base.The project, Sources of Transformative Innovation in Medication Development, will identify 10-15 medically transformative drugs, define their scientific provenance, and assess the intellectual, social, and financial factors that influenced their development, with a focus on how well patents are able to reward the most important contributors. An innovative alternative to the current patent system will be tested. Deliverables include journal articles, presentations at medical and law conferences, and a book of case studies exploring how breakthrough innovation emerges in the pharmaceutical sciences.
