The Green House Initiative was designed to: (1) increase the Green House adoption rates from 25 homes per year to 125 through intensive financing, marketing and policy activities; (2) develop a series of program evaluations; and (3) use the Green House Initiative as the catalyst for transforming institutional care at skilled-nursing homes. This authorization will increase the development of Green House homes from 25 per year to 125, representing 15 percent of annual construction starts in the market for skilled-nursing facilities. This increase will push Green House adoption into the mainstream of long-term care and set the stage for Green House homes to become the benchmark of quality for community-based, skilled-nursing care. The Green House model is a disruptive innovation intended to displace institutional skilled-nursing care with small, community-based homes. It uses a market-driven strategy that makes Green House homes the viable and desirable option for the renovation and/or replacement of skilled-nursing beds in a community.
