Comparing the Green House model with traditional nursing homes on cost and quality of care

The Foundation's Green House Initiative was designed to: (1) increase the Green House adoption rates from 25 homes per year to 125 through intensive financing, marketing and policy activities; (2) develop a series of program evaluations; and (3) use the Green House Initiative as the catalyst for transforming institutional care at skilled-nursing homes.This project is part of a research collaborative to evaluate the Green House project. The research collaborative will provide policy-makers and practitioners information about how the Green House model is implemented and how it affects care for residents in long-term care facilities. This project will use national, administrative-level datasets to compare pre and post-cost and quality outcomes in facilities adopting the Green House model against a group of other types of long-term care (non-Green House) facilities. Specific attributes of those facilities that adopt the Green House model will also be explored. Data from the period 2005 through 2010, during which time the number of Green House facilities grew from 1 to 17, will be used in analyzing outcomes and associated costs at both the resident and facility levels. Deliverables will include the construction of analytic datasets for use by all researchers collaborating with the evaluation, written briefs for use by the national program office and grantees, presentations, journal articles and collaborative activities with members of the research team.
