The Foundation's Active Living Research program was designed to support investigator-initiated research to identify and assess structural, environmental, and policy changes with the potential to increase population levels of physical activity. This grant provides continued funding for technical assistance and direction for the Active Living Research (ALR) program and its work to stimulate and support research identifying environmental factors and policies with the potential to increase everyday physical activity among children and families in order to reverse the rise in childhood obesity. The program places a special emphasis on research addressing ways to increase youth physical activity levels in the low-income and racial/ethnic communities at highest risk. Core activities to achieve goals this 12-month period include: (1) convening meetings involving different academic disciplines and policy makers to define the most important research questions; (2) coordinating efforts with CDC, NIH and other key funders to build the field and develop future research agendas particularly around childhood obesity and collaborating with the Foundation's Childhood Obesity Team's other national programs (e.g., Healthy Eating Research, Bridging the Gap, Healthy Schools Program, the Foundation's Center for Prevention Childhood Obesity, Leadership for Healthy Communities); (3) designing and implementing a Round 8 call for proposals that will award over 37 competitive grants in 2008 and a parallel Round 2 New Connections call for proposals; (4) planning and hosting the annual 2008 ALR national conference and 2008 grantee meeting; (5) providing technical assistance, direction and mentoring to all current and new grantees and applicants; (6) actively disseminating grantee findings to researchers, policy makers and decision makers through publications, presentations, and the ALR website in collaboration with the Foundation's communications officers and contractors and the Foundation's new Leadership for Healthy Communities program; and (7) organizing and implementing strategic field-building activities in concert with ALR's diverse and multidisciplinary National Advisory Committee.
